At St Alban's, we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. This is a systematic, synthetic phonics programme. The programme begins in the first two weeks of Reception class and continues all the way through Year 1. The aim is that children will be fluent readers when they finish Year 1. Some children will need more support as they move into Year 2 and we currently provide this in either small intervention groups or 1:1 teaching if necessary.

Please see our policy here.

In Nursery, we use  Little Wandle Foundations for Phonics. This contributes to the provision for 'Communication and language' and 'Literacy' (DfE 2020). It sits alongside a simulating and language rich provision. Foundations for Phonics sets out the provision that should be in place to ensure children are well prepared to begin grapheme- phoneme correspondence and blending at the start of Reception. The provision includes a range of adult- led and child- led experiences.

Important aspects in Nursery are:

  • sharing high quality stories and poems with the children
  • learning a range of nursery rhymes and action rhymes
  • activities which develop focused listening and attention, including oral blending
  • attention to high quality language with the children
